In the film Black Panther, the fictitious country of Wakanda had an abundance of the precious metal Vibranium. The idea is that mineral is the most valuable on earth. It now appears fiction may have become reality for west Africa.
Nigeria just made an incredible discovery that could dramatically change the economic landscape of the country. Nigeria has discovered Lithium which, to some, is the equivalent of a real world Vibranium, such is the value of this mineral.
The fact that Elon Musk and Tesla have approached Nigeria and want a piece of the pie is just one sign of what we have uncovered. This may be the opportunity Nigeria needs to repair its severely damaged economy and leverage against western corporations. Something we badly need in the face of uncertainty amidst the currency fiasco and disappointment from the latest elections.
Lithium is a mineral used for batteries. As you know electric cars have become increasingly popular and they run on batteries made with lithium as one of the key components. It is thought that while lithium now accounts for 30% of the batteries made, in a decade or so it will account for 95%. That means the value it going to rise any country that can get in the game now is going to win and win big. As they say, getting in early is always best when it comes to innovation or new initiatives.
The price of lithium went from $6000 per ton in 2020 to $78000 dollars per ton in 2022. That’s a huge jump in value and they’re saying by 2040 it may be the most valuable mineral on earth if it isn’t already. Nigeria finding this mineral is a big deal.
For those not aware, Nigeria to date has discovered over 44 minerals occurring in commercial quantities. This means at levels viable for sale and profit on the international market. Nigeria should be winning. There is hardly a mineral of value that can’t be found in Nigeria.
Tesla have asked to mine the lithium but Nigeria’s minister of mines and steel development, Olamilekan Adegbite, said no and that the only way they will do a deal is if Tesla and other corporations build their plants in Nigeria.
This is a smart move and one we should have always employed with any negotiations for our many resources. This strategy will create jobs and opportunities for Nigerians and give a greater boost to the economy than just selling the mineral overseas.
I made a video on my YouTube channel about how Ghana and the Ivory Coast are engaged in a Cocoa War with western corporations using this same concept of taking control of the resources they produce. You want our cocoa for chocolate, we set the rules on how you get it. Much respect to Ghana and The Ivory Coast. So Nigeria now waging a war for Lithium is a very good sign for the African continent.
However this isn’t all good news. Mining lithium is very damaging to the environment and we all know the issues Nigeria has had with oil pollution. Do we really want to introduce another type of environmental pollution to the country? The truth is, do we have a choice if we want to stay competitive? Nigeria is now trying to make a deal with Australia who is one of the third biggest suppliers of Lithium alongside Chile and China.
I have to be honest this is exciting news if Nigeria don’t squander this and they manage to use this as a platform to build for the future so that our children have something meaningful to bargain with at the global table. Nigeria is blessed because for some reason we keep getting second chances at resurrection. The question is, this time, will we take it?
