Are you worried about the economic future of Africa? Every developed nation on earth is battling for leverage over Africa with renewed vigour. Right now. With everything they’ve got. You’re about to find out why.
The dollar is going to die and Africa may soon be trading in a different currency controlled by BRICS, the coalition of developing nations; Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The international economic system has been dominated by the US dollar and British pound for decades but BRICS are developing what they say is a fairer system of monetary exchange. This is a big deal for everyone on earth, especially Africa. Separation from the US dollar and a move to a currency more closely tied to our contribution to the world economy will dramatically accelerate development across the whole continent.
I was astonished I knew nothing about the BRICS initiative till about a month ago even though it’s existed since the 1990’s. I will assume many of you don’t know much about it either. It’s an initiative the mainstream western media’s barely spoken of regardless of the fact it’s potentially the most impactful move for commerce in Africa’s history. I will allow you to hypothesise why there’s been this deafening silence.
For decades African nations have been at the mercy of the west, specifically the G7 which is the coalition of western nations; UK, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan. This organisation has met annually since 1975 with a focus on their shared values of pluralism, liberal democracy, and representative government. These nations then set policies that directly affect Africa without Africans being present at the meetings nor giving input specific to our interests. This set up is directly linked to colonialism with many of the nations in the G7 having a major hand in exploitation of African resources. The main culprits of this have obviously been the UK, France and US. The issue with the G7 isn’t isolated to resource exploitation but also financial markets and the subjugation of Africa via exchange rates and devalued currency. This is one of the most powerful ways neo-colonialism has worked on the continent.
The G7 has been a monopoly. Zero checks and balances. Zero accountability to anyone outside of their organisation. This isn't a good position for Africa. BRICS is going to change that. As such, the US, UK and France are worried about their African interests. For the first time in history, the G7 have real competition and it doesn’t look like they can stop the impending tidal wave of change. While everyone was focused on the war in Ukraine, Russia’s been involved with bolstering the BRICS initiative. Ironically, it’s the western reaction theRussia/Ukraine war that led to Russia intensifying their efforts with BRICS.
The BRICS nations were initially identified for investment opportunities for the west but since 2009 they started annual meetings to discuss strategy and policy. This is something western nations have been doing with the G7 for decades, the group of seven consisting mainly of western nations with Japan as the outsider. Africa’s never been courted to be part of the coalition even though we’re the pre eminent resource provider. Here are some of the things BRICS have already done while most of the world weren’t watching.
The New Development Bank
Contingent Reserve Arrangement
BRICS payment system
BRICS basket reserve currency
These are direct competitors to G7 institutions and are clearly laying a foundation for separation from the US Dollar, EURO and British Pound en masse. The day that happens, any African country that is a part of this coalition would be well on their way to financial liberation from the shackles of debt and weak exchange rates.
BRICS’s rapid acceleration in recent years has resulted in everyone wanting to be Africa’s friend. From France, England, the US, Russia to China, Africa’s never been so popular and it’s not because of a change of heart. This is about consolidating interests for the future. US vice president Kamala Harris’s visit to Ghana and French president Macron’s friendship tour of Africa is a sign of the concern the US and France have over Africa’s potential alliance with BRICS nations implicitly against the G7.
When the US and France visited Africa on a good will tour we knew something was up. Since when did Africa matter that much for no reason? Macron visited a number of African countries such as Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola and Gabon and in Kinshasa, President Felix Tshisekedi told Macron directly that France needed to show more respect to Congo especially with its paternalistic attitude.
This is something all former French colonies have an issue with France for, especially black African nations. France is in major trouble as their history in Africa is atrocious, so much so that Macron skipped over west Africa on his tour. If the US and France lose all their African influence, their economies will collapse fast. Macron knows it. Biden and Kamala know it and they are not the only ones. Putin knows it too.
Russia wants Africa and they’re making plays for taking over the west’s spot by way of replacing the bad deals we’ve had from the west. This is simple business. The west didn’t give us good customer service. No money back guarantee and no phone support. We want a better option now.
China’s also made inroads and is laying a foundation for this coalition of BRICS. With the sheer level of Chinese investment into African economies by way of infrastructure, it's clear they want a situation where Africa’s so deeply entrenched, the BRICS move would be a no brainer.
In the coming months and years, expect to see even heavier anti Russia and China propaganda from western media. This is to dissuade African nations from joining the coalition by way of getting the African population to refuse any partnerships with who the G7 say are the bad guys. I just don’t think that’s going to work. Not anymore.
So what is on offer? What is it African nations have to choose between?
BRICS could offer Africa more energy and transportation infrastructure. We know Russia’s a leader in global energy and a deal direct with Russia for nuclear fuel would be big for us in lieu of the unfair deals we currently have with the US and UK. Russia wants to establish a business relationship in Africa that would effectively neutralise the west on the continent. We don’t have the colonial and slavery history with Russia that we do with the UK and France and we’re not fighting the same battles for fair trade with them that we are with those nations. In essence, it’s a clean slate and in business that’s invaluable.
What might the G7 be offering us?
Most likely more aid and loans, as if we don’t have enough of those already. They also have immigration incentives like visas but why would we want to promote more of us going to countries where we’re not wanted? In exchange, the US would want Africa to conform even more to western ideology which was highlighted by Kamala Harris’s comments on human rights violations in the LGBTQ community in Ghana to which president Adoo shut her down.
This isn’t to say LGBTQ issues aren’t important but the idea a country like the US, with all their own human rights violations specifically against their black citizens, would go to the continent they stole Africans from to lecture them about what we should be doing is ridiculous. Africa’s had enough of being treated with contempt in spite of the immense contribution we’ve made to the world economy. BRICS presents a far better deal and a level of dignity Africa hasn’t had in centuries. This isn’t because they want to but because they have to. That’s the benefit of competition and it doesn’t end with BRICS nations. With the rumblings that Saudi Arabia is going to start selling its oil in currencies other than the dollar, that sent shockwaves across the western hemisphere.
In 1971 Nixon ended the convertibility of the dollar to gold. In 1974 Saudi Arabia did a deal with the US to trade their oil exclusively in dollars in exchange for US protection. This is literally the same thing as a mafia deal where business owners would pay them protection money. I mean is that or is that not extortion? Anyway, this became commonly known as the petrodollar system and made the US dollar the global reserve currency because you know everyone needs oil right?
In the future, I’m going write about energy where I’ll get into that whole okey doke as to whether the reticence to move to renewable energy is about real logistical issues or the allure of the profit staying with fossil fuels represents for certain blocs.
China has also confirmed they’ll buy energy from the Persian gulf in its own currency the renminbi while Saudia Arabia’s considering selling to China in Yuan. What Russia and China are doing through the BRICS coalition is going to destroy the ridiculous privilege the US unipolar monetary system has enjoyed and create what is essentially a decentralised system where we’ll have multiple monetary systems at play.
This is a similar ideology to WEB 3 which I spoke about in one of my videos, and what crypto was meant to become before the CBDC development was introduced to slow that down. I will also be posting an article on CBDC’s you should watch.
South Africa’s foreign minister Naledi Pandor said the development of a BRICS monetary exchange is to directly weaken the dollar so this isn’t speculation of what the game plan is. When you read my article on the The Nigeria Lithium Wars or my forthcoming article on the Ghana and Ivory Coast Cocoa Wars, you see a recurring theme; African nations producing resources but not in control of how those resources are traded and in what currency. If you buy and sell in dollars then the insane exchange rates we have no control over make it incredibly expensive for us and benefits the western nations greatly. However if we no longer have to sell in US dollars, we make a lot more money with a system that gives us a better rate of exchange per sale. This will change everything for Africa. Everything.
The US use unilateral sanctions to intimidate African nations who fall out of favour with them. This means they are judge, jury and executioner and because we are primarily trading with them in their currency because that currency is the most lucrative, we are essentially trapped.
With this BRICS initiative, a US sanction would no longer be as damaging to an African nation as we would be making more lucrative deals with China, Russia and other BRICS nations. So this is a situation where it’s actually in African interests to work with China to come to a mutually agreeable situation. Whatever we do with them cannot be worse than the situation we have with the G7 nations.
Economist Zoltan Pozsar wrote an op-ed in the Financial Times where he says the assault on the US dollar is coming from multiple directions and that even the CBDC is a threat to dollars dominance. This is really happening.
I would approach BRICS with caution though. They’re making nice now because they need us. That doesn’t mean things won’t change once the G7 are no longer the primary predator. Regardless this is the most powerful Africa’s ever been in terms of genuine leverage which means we can actually negotiate. Africa is the prize. If we’re smart, we can call the shots of exactly how this goes.
What BRICS could mean for African debt and economic imprisonment by former colonial countries is immense. We just have to watch our backs. Trust no one but take everything we’ve learned from past mistakes into account. This is why I’m bringing this information to my audience. This isn’t the time to just sit back and let your politicians decide what to do. This is the time to be educated and informed.
So who’s it going to be? BRICS or the G7?
This is a huge choice to make and will dictate the next fifty years of African development. What we do now will affect the lives of our children and grandchildren dramatically. Regardless of the risk of a new partnership, BRICS seems too good an opportunity to miss for African nations struggling with western debt and the legacy of colonialism. As crazy as it may seem, in a few decades the west could trade places with the southern hemisphere and Africa as the pre eminent world power.
I’m sure we’ll be nicer to them than they’ve been to us.

We are in a great position to negotiate from a place of power but our leaders are weak, their greed and need for instant gratification makes them weak at the negotiating table. As young Africans we need to stay vigilant and on top of what our leadership is doing to make the most of BRICS. Otherwise we will just be trading one oppressor for another.
