The impact of Nigerian youth leaving the country for better opportunities abroad
Much has been said about Africa’s natural resources and the ways in which they’ve been exploited by western powers. However, another form of natural resource is often overlooked in the conversation about Africa’s development. That resource is intellect. More specifically, the skills and expertise of Africans leaving the continent for those same western nations and strengthening them in a way that might actually be more valuable than oil or gold.
The former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi said the ‘Japa’ phenomenon AKA The Brain Drain is good for Nigeria. The Brain Drain is where young Nigerian professionals leave the country for better opportunities abroad, and this severely impacts not only Nigeria but the entire African continent. I’m going to explain why I completely disagree with Mr. Obi’s perspective.
