Africa had universities while Europe was still in the Dark Ages
The ancient history of Timbuktu
Alkebulanians,
There’s this tired lie that still shows up in classrooms, movies, and conversations all over the world. It goes something like this:
Africa didn’t have books. Africans didn’t write anything down. There were no schools, no universities, no formal knowledge systems, just oral stories and scattered tribes.
While some of this isn’t totally inaccurate, such as the oral traditions, which in itself was a good thing, most of it doesn’t hold up when you look at the facts.
The truth is, in the heart of West Africa, hundreds of years ago, African scholars were running one of the most sophisticated education systems in the world.
It had books. It had degrees. And it had global respect.
I had no idea about this till recently so it’s great to share some of this history with you.
